Web Updates Case Study
“Lead, follow, or get out of the way”
~General George S. Patton
The challenge 🏔️
After the simultaneous launch of four new Roomba models in Fall 2023, by late October, it was apparent that one model (the i5) was underperforming. iRobot leadership mandated increasing the model’s sales. In response, there was a flurry of disjointed activities, emails, and Slack channel chatter across various teams, but no actionable plan forward.
The solutions 💡
Realizing I was the only person with a comprehensive view of all these efforts and communiques, I knew it was my responsibility (even as a relatively new member of the organization) to finally lead rather than follow or get out of the way.
I initiated collaborative efforts by emailing senior stakeholders and outlining the disparate efforts. Along with my own recommendations, I collated the best solutions from each team into an “i5 Web Update” Confluence page. A problem statement and a proposed solution statement unified this page. Knowing the high priority level, I also included a definitive delivery date and a schedule for further discovery, asset creation, product marketing review, and legal review.
The results ✅
Communicating actionable solutions from and to various stakeholders and making data-driven recommendations won consensus for my plan and ownership for my team. I drove the initiative from start to finish, culminating in the publication of my omnichannel “i5 Web Update” toolkit.
By setting and meeting expected due dates, the timing of the i5 updates aligned properly with all market teams’ sprint schedules. This allowed global teams and Amazon/Retail channels to implement the updates in time for the peak holiday selling season. As a result, the i5 gained significant ground during this time and met sales benchmarks to close out the year stronger than anticipated.
